Who We Are:
  • Our approximately 30 members meet twice annually for general meetings in October and May.
  • Members range from students in the Family and Nutritional Sciences Department at UPEI to practicing professionals, those who are working outside the field of home economics and those who are retired.
  • Members reside in PEI and in Nova Scotia.
What We Do:
  • We generally host 1-2 professional development events, a summer garden party, and a Christmas social each year.
  • Our major fundraiser is the HO HO Home Ec Auction.
  • We produce and distribute a newsletter 3-4 times each year, and have been providing information about safe turkey roasting tips to recipients of over 2000 turkey hampers every Christmas.
  • The PEIHEA sponsors prizes at the PEI Science Fair for projects in the junior, intermediate and senior categories for projects involving home economics, and at the PEI Heritage Fair.
  • The PEIHEA awards the Doris M Anderson Award each year for an Island student in the final year of a home economics related undergraduate degree.
  • We are currently preparing a Youth Living Guide, Lessons for Living, (which can be downloaded as a pdf file) for those learning to live on their own.
Our Beginnings:
A committee of the Association launched WHO WE ARE: OUR HERITAGE AND HORIZONS - Home Economics in Prince Edward Island in the Twentieth Century in 2006.  The book costs $20, plus $7 shipping, and can be ordered by sending a cheque payable to Heather Henry MacDonald at 70 Westwood Cres.
